Rome Post #3

Hi All,

So much to see here in Rome, already a million pictures, and not enough time to blog it all! Here's a quick updated on our trip to the Vatican yesterday, but let's just say this is only a teaser; you'll have to enjoy the rest of the photos with us when we get back home! :)

This is us in front of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City. In the middle left of the picture, you can seea giant jumbotron TV screen. When we arrived at the Piazza San Pietro, the Pope was speaking! We didn't actually see him in person, he was too far away, but we did see him on the screens! Pretty cool, but downside was that there was a huge line to get into the Basilica!

This is Kristina giving her impression of one of the many thousands of sculptures that are housed in the Musei Vaticani, or Vatican Museums. Kristina thought she was being hilarious trying to look like a monkey, but when I informed her that this was a statuette of the ancient egyptian SOMETHIng of Pregnancy, she exclaimed, "Why didn't you tell me, I would've pushed my stomach out!"

Us together inside St. Peter's Basilica. This place is truly amazing, and words can hardly convey the grandeur of it all. First off, it is massive, and every surface is covered in marble, gold, or bronze. All of the countless pictures on the walls look like paintings, but they are actually all mosiacs! And the letters you see in the top of the picture are really something like 6 feet tall. Even the large sculptures are elongated so that they look proportioned from the ground hundreds of feet below, but if you were to look at them at eye level, they would seem mishapen! As a sidenote, we've come to the conclusion that we take better pictures of ourselves using the 10-second timer delay on our camera than other people are able to do holding it!

And lastly, here is the view just outside the doors of the Basilica, with Kristina overlooking the Piazza. Look at the clouds, don't they look like they were painted in? Pretty amazing, and we consider ourselves so lucky to have seen it in person!

As ever, more to come when we get the chance! I have to tell you about the super special opportunity I had at the Vatican to go somewhere most people never get to go! The SCAVI Tour! Look for that in posts to come! And now, we're off to see more of Rome! Have a great day everyone!

Love,

Ry
